Divided by a common language
May. 5th, 2021 05:20 pmThere are people in the UK shipping goods to St Vincent for the people displaced by the volcanic eruption. This doesn't seem efficient to me - there are organizations in Florida doing the same thing, and the shipping must be faster and cheaper. I am not in charge, or I would say that the UK folks should just send money to more local organizations. Possibly the FL people should as well. At any rate, I saw a list on twitter of what was being collected:
Fold up chairs
torch lights
camping mats
flasks
cool bags
mop buckets
brooms/dustpans
clothes pegs
Some of those are the same here. Some aren't. I am especially entertained by cool bags, which is probably more descriptive than insulated bags, but I can't help imagining purses with clever designs on them or something. Torches are flashlights, not flaming things. I know that clothes pegs are just clothes pins (and when you hang wet clothes on the line, you peg them out), but the expression makes me think of the Shaker peg racks. That's what we use for coats in the ringing room at Old North, and there is one on the back of our bedroom door for bathrobes.
