sideline musings
Sep. 1st, 2005 01:54 pmThings on the fringe of the news from the Katrina disaster have been grabbing my attention.
I saw a photograph of a notice spray painted on the side of a store in New Orleans: "Looters will be shot on site." I guess that makes more sense than taking the looter somewhere else to shoot him or her.
In a radio report about the astounding overnight rise in gas prices, the reporter remarked that investigations were underway to see whether it was because of gouging or just the usual higher prices for Labor Day. Does that mean that regularly scheduled gouging is OK? Along those lines, Mr. Bush suggested this morning that people try to drive less and conserve gas. I may be wrong, but I think this is the first time that he even entertained such an idea. It's a coincidence of timing, but as is often the case, I am going to ignore Presidential pronouncements. From Saturday until Wednesday I expect to drive a rental car almost 500 miles.
