X-men, first class
Jun. 11th, 2011 06:25 pmRemarkably violent movie. What were they thinking, rating that PG13? (they were thinking it would make a lot more money if kids were admitted. I don't have any faith in the rating people).
One of the preceding trailers was for "Cowboys & Aliens." I think the last time I saw a Harrison Ford movie in a movie theater was Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom (1984), which is the movie that inspired the PG13 rating to begin with.
Aside from the violence, and as some people have remarked, some badly spoken Russian, we thought it was well done. I am a little confused about which mutants age and which don't, but I haven't read the comics, so I can't complain about missing some background knowledge. Recommended, with reservations.
Also - I was alive at the time of the Cuban Missile crisis, and I'm pretty sure that surly teenagers didn't say "whatever" in the way they do now, nor did anybody say "are you OK with that?" The cars and the clothes looked pretty good for the time period. Arthur feels that the period atmosphere would have been improved had we seen Hank use a slide rule. There were several *deliberate* modernisms or in-jokes that briefly detracted from the flow, but not too badly.
It's not listed in the imdb, but I think one of the scenes was filmed at West Wycombe Park.
