I went into the Cambridge Street (Boston) Whole foods yesterday and saw that they had a half-price sale on blueberry pies. Not apple, not any other variety, just blueberry. I bought one (pie had not been on the shopping list) and over the space of a few hours ate about a third of a 9" pie. This morning, while getting ready to bike to get pancakes, I decided that I would be temperate in my consumption, based on the amount of carbs already loaded last night. There are four locations in Lexington for Patriot's Day pancakes - I always go to the Baptist church because they use real plates and flatware, not plastic. Once I got started, though, I ate my usual big pile of them. So much for moderation. I'll be running a 5 mile race in about an hour, but even that amount of exercise won't "burn off" that many calories. That's not why I run, but I do sometimes make that kind of calculation - part of popular culture sinks in, even to people as resistant to it as I sometimes am.

Update 44:20. As healthy as someone would be who had a large stack of pancakes 2 hours before a race. My guts weren't really pleased, but it was OK. I dutifully slowed down on hills & stopped twice for water, which I usually would not do in a race that length.
