holiday observance
Oct. 31st, 2012 11:24 amI just carved the pumpkin, making a mess of it, but it's done, and only has to survive for another 10 hours. Instead of getting out the little saws and doing something elaborate, it just has two round eyes and a smiling mouth - no teeth, even. I used the filet knife that my grandmother gave us decades ago, which is only used on this one day a year. I don't know what she thought we would filet in a vegetarian household, but she probably wasn't thinking of jack- o'lanterns. While working, I was listening to the Richard Shindell song "Are you happy now." Apparently I never listened to the lyrics carefully before - it takes place on Halloween. It's not a surprise that it's seasonal - it's on a compilation cassette (really) called "When October Goes," a bunch of folkies, but I didn't know it was specifically suitable for today.
