A new experience (or two)

In addition to my shift a week at MGH's Blum Patient & Family Learning Center (in which I occasionally help people research medical conditions but more often referee printer use), I am going to start volunteering at the VA near Heath Street.  I have now been (electronically) fingerprinted.  I have friends (much younger than I am) who said that they were fingerprinted as children, in case of kidnapping, I guess, but I never have had it happen before.  In a fit of tiredness, or resignation, or something, I have told the VA my social security number without fighting it too much, even though they are not going to be using it for tax or SS purposes.  The fingerprint lady said that they will shred the form upon which I wrote it, but since it's now in their computer system, I don't feel that my privacy is much protected.
