Annihilation (no spoilers)

First, may I say that I was very happy with the seats in Somerville Theater #5? We really detest the oddly-priced reservations-required recliner seats at the Burlington AMC, which was(in mileage) the closest place to me that it was playing. Somerville was the closest in the sense that I had an errand to do in Davis anyway, and it's less than a minute walk from the T to the box office. I am confused by the much-discussed model for releasing this movie. It has a two-week theatrical release before showing up on Netflix, because there aren't enough men? Something like that? (more accurately, a disagreement between producer and director about final cut?). It seemed to me that there were pretty much exactly the right number of men. When I did the location check, there were more than 25 screens in the greater area (from Framingham to Danvers), which seems like pretty good coverage, but Boston is a movie-going region. Not playing in Arlington or Lexington. At any rate, if you are planning to see it, I suggest full-size, because a lot of the attraction is "look at the colors." And at the pretty people.
I left the film wondering what assistance an Antarctic crew provided (it's in the thank you section of the credits), but mostly wondering what happened next. Even though there are three books in the series on which it was based, there are no plans for a sequel. I haven't read any of them, and after a while on Goodreads, I don't think the sequels would answer my questions anyway - I just want to know about the future lives of two of the main characters. At some point soon, I will try to track down fan fiction.
