I don't think sending the troops to the border is a mid-term election stunt. I think Trump has been waiting for the opportunity to prove that he has absolute power. Of course everybody knows that it would be illegal for US troops on US soil to fire in that circumstance. But it doesn't matter, if some of them are willing to do it. When Trump first issued the ban on Muslims, it was unlawful as stated too, but the CBP and others immediately enforced it, without hesitation. DJT said yesterday that even a thrown rock would be taken as instigation for returning fire. One thinks of the Boston Massacre, but those were snowballs. Or ice chunks.
I feel that I should buy a plane ticket and lie down in front of them, like people in front of tanks in times past. But I don't want to die anytime soon. During the preparation for the invasion of Iraq, I called the White House daily, and senators as well. Fat lot of good it did me. But I will start again today.
In a fun with history way, I keep thinking of Harold Godwinson and his troops. When William arrived near Hastings, they were far away, having been busy otherwise. If they hadn't been massed somewhere else, and more rested, would William's Army have taken the day (and the country, and the future of the English language)? What if we have all those troops at the Mexican border and the Russians decide to invade Alaska? Or Canadian Navy ships sail across the Great Lakes?

I also think of Harold whenever someone talks about Prince Edward of the UK, whose post-marriage title is the Earl of Wessex. What was the queen thinking, giving him that as a wedding present? Isn't she jinxing him to an arrow in the eye at some point?
