A couple of weeks ago, I posted about a fall and some other injuries. The scabs on my knees are almost gone, the aches are lessened. And then I fell again yesterday, tripping on the flagstone sidewalk outside John Hancock Hall in Boston, while walking our daughter back before the 7 PM show of "What the Dickens," in which she has a small tapping part. No warning, just BOOM, onto my (right, of course) elbow and hip. It is interesting that the reaction of my family members was to try to get me up right away. That is definitely not what I wanted - I felt the need to clear my head, take stock of injuries (be sure that nothing is broken), etc. The two women walking by when I screamed came to ask if I was OK, even though I had solicitous people with me. I told them I thought I was bruised but not broken, and they carried on.
I was interested to see that my elbow was scraped (by my shirt?) even though it was three layers away from the hard surface. This morning I was surprised to note that despite ongoing pain in the two joints in question, nothing is swollen, or purple. Do I have particularly tough blood vessels, so that nothing breaks or leaks? If I'm injured, why isn't there any inflammation?
Two falls in two weeks. If I were twenty years older, I would be flagged on my medical records as at risk. Do I not walk carefully enough? I am grateful that nothing broke. Maybe taking alendronate is worthwhile after all. (I take it bi-weekly instead of weekly. My doctor knows, and is OK with it, because I showed her a study that didn't find any difference).
