Last night I went to hear Raj Chetty give a non-technical talk about "Creating equality of opportunity in America." It was part of the Cary lecture series, in Cary Hall, which is down the street from the Cary library. It's nice that rich people used to donate things and fund things. I don't think there are any Cary descendants left in Lexington, but the trust goes on. I say non-technical because I understood everything. I don't know what percentage of the population of the US knows the word disaggregate, for example, but he presumed that everybody in the audience would, and that we'd understand census maps and bar charts and so forth. He's a really clear speaker, with a pleasant voice, good timing, not much in the way of um or you know kind of filler. But his suit jacket didn't fit and it was distracting. I follow tailoring writer Derek Guy on twitter and I have learned a lot. There is this website also

RC's shirt and trousers looked fine, so I don't know what's up with the jacket, but I felt better after he unbuttoned it and it was no longer straining. I also spent some of my distraction time wondering how expansive his research budget is. The BIG DATA he is using would be expensive to acquire and process.
I learned a lot, am now following Opportunity Insights on twitter and hope at some point to spend some time with the opportunity atlas.

I walked home by myself, to an empty house, where there was nobody around with whom I could discuss the talk. Story of my life, apparently.
