Trains and campaigns
Aug. 21st, 2024 10:03 amLast night there were two locations for the DNC - the actual convention in Chicago, and a crowded arena (with Kamala and Tim) in Milwaukee. K & T had been in Chicago earlier and will be back. I bet they are not taking Amtrak for the trip, but I think they should. There are seven trains a day, and each takes less than an hour and a half, downtown to downtown.
Thinking of that made me realize that it has been sixty years (or will be in early October) since Ladybird Johnson did a multi-state whistle-stop campaign tour. One of the 47* stops was Durham, NC. I went with my father. I'm not sure about my mother and sister, but I think they stayed home. I vaguely remember LB standing to give the speech, but what I mostly remember is that many people were waving Johnson signs around, blocking the view. My father kept yelling "Put the cards down!" Is that an odd thing to remember? It was such a Daddy thing to do.
* I had no idea how many stops she made until I looked it up.
