Last night his mother Phyllis died. I was one of the family members with her. She had had multiple breathing-related ailments for years, but there was a lot of worsening since this summer. I wouldn’t say it was a broken heart after losing her spouse of 75 years (who was not quite the boy next door, but he was friends with her brother, so they knew each other before dating), but it can’t have helped.
This was my second time watching a parent die specifically of lung complications

My mother’s breathing problems were not quite as directly caused by stuff in her lungs, but even though heart failure was the real cause, my mother-in-law’s panic from oxygen hunger was very familiar when I saw it again in this case.
Years ago a receptionist at the VA reminded me that I was lucky to have both parents. I said that I had both parents-in-law as well. He was incredulous. It was rare to have four in their 90s. Now they’re all gone.
She had 19 direct descendent, plus spouses and steps. Being a mom wasn’t her only attribute, but it says something that long ago, unbeknownst to each other, two of her children gave her “World’s best mom” lucite paperweights on the same Mother’s Day. She liked show tunes and reading and old movies and mah jong (plus many other games). In her youth she was a really good swimmer. So many random memories.
In September, during my visit
