I have a pair of knee-high rubber boots that I wear when shoveling snow or other around the house activities like that. Otherwise my footwear is almost always sneakers. Anything heavier than that affects my gait, and anyway, boots rub against my leg skin. But after falling last week I started thinking about boots with heavy-duty treads. My running shoes are not trail runners, and I wear them out before tossing them, so their soles are not very grippy. A (much younger than me) tap classmate had some new Doc Martens that seemed to be canvas with the recognizable treads. She said they came from Nordstrom Rack. After ringing practice I decided to investigate while I was in Boston.

By coincidence, the ones they had in my size matched my winter coat very well. They weren't comfortable. I bought some marked-down fuzzy socks to add to my usual wet winter Darn Tough layer and tried again. Better. I walked around the store for quite a while, but they still were not something I'd like to wear outside for long periods of time, so with some regret, I put them back on the shelf. I bought a pair of Yaktrax studded rubber bands (basically) that stretch to go over the toes of shoes. I will see how well they work in a few days, when we will be in an icy world.
