Instead of writing fan fiction
Feb. 7th, 2025 01:32 pmYears ago (no clue) there was a remark on the Talking Piffle tumblr (which apparently still exists) that I took to be a challenge to write fan fiction about Beatie Wilson (Robinson), a child who has a very small part in "Gaudy Night" (1935) by Dorothy Sayers. She informed her mother and Harriet that when she grew up, she was going to ride a motorcycle. There wasn't a lot of context, but I guessed she was somewhere between 7 and 10 years old at the time. With some fudging, could she have become a despatch rider during WWII?
I don't know who took the photo.

I'm not a writer, so I didn't really get more than a couple of paragraphs written, but it stayed in my mind and popped up again today when I saw that rider Pamela Jordan died late last year at age 99. I don't know how many more of them could be left at this point.
The other thought I had at the time was that maybe Beatie grew up to be Red Molly. That would have required more writing imagination than I have either, but E Wein was kind enough to encourage me. Never happened.
