lauradi7dw: me wearing a straw hat and gray mask (anniversary)
This morning when I got on the Big Red (a style of subway car) train that was waiting around at Alewife for its inbound trip, I noticed that there was a screw (bolt?) sitting on the floor under the seat opposite me, threaded side up. I guessed it had fallen directly down from helping to hold the seat together. I wondered what I should do with it so that eventually a maintenance person could put it where it belonged. No clue. I decided to fix it myself. That required lying on the floor (not entirely clean but entirely dry and non-sticky) and switching my hands back and forth. Left hand fit the space better, right hand more coordinated. I managed the task, although since I didn't have a socket wrench with me, 1 it was just hand-tightened and might fall out again. Here is an unclear photo.

The train wasn't very crowded. Everyone in the car with me was sunk deep into their phone screens. Nobody said anything to me. Nobody asked why I was lying on the floor, or if I needed help getting up. I generally don't say anything to people who are asleep on the seats, after a quick scan to see if they are breathing normally 2 but I think I might inquire of someone on the floor.

1 In the early 1980s I did carry an adjustable wrench in my backpack. I decided when Flo was born and I had to start carrying around objects for her that it was too heavy and space-consuming. It wouldn't have fit in the space required anyway, I don't think.
In my regular daily backpack I do have a tourniquet, extra underwear, a washcloth, masks, and a copy of the US Constitution, in addition to stuff that other people might have, like a water bottle and snacks.

2 At the First Aid class a couple of weeks ago, we discussed again whether to wake people up, or how to decide whether to just go ahead and shoot Narcan up their noses. I have been trained twice in the latter, but still don't carry it around.
