Yesterday I was waiting in the long human cashier line at the Lexington Stop & Shop. No express lane, no other staffed lane at all, just the check it out yourself area. Black teenager carrying a box of muffins and something else looked, and then looked around. I offered to let him go in front of me, but it wouldn't have helped much because the person in front of me had a full cart. I suggested he try the self-checkout aisle. He said no, that if he walked out with stuff that way he'd be accused of stealing. I said "that's weird" and he agreed, but I think he opted for it anyway. Would someone stop him? The self-checkout voice insists that you take your receipt, so he could have proven non-theft if he had to.
The assumptions themselves would have been bad, of course.
