bastion

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 23, 2025 is:

bastion • \BAS-chun\  • noun

A bastion is a place or system in which something (such as an idea) is protected and continues to survive.

// The restaurant is a bastion of the region’s ancient culinary traditions.

See the entry >

Examples:

“In 2017, Harlem residents took to the streets to protest Keller Williams after the real estate company began marketing the neighborhood’s 15-block southern radius (between 110th Street and 125th Street) as ‘SoHa’ (South Harlem) without their approval. The biggest worry? That newcomers would attempt to erase Harlem’s history as a civil rights nexus and bastion of Black American culture. In response, then-New York Sen. Brian Benjamin introduced legislation that banned unsolicited name changes and fined real estate firms for using names like SoHa.” — Jake Kring-Schreifels, Spokeo, 26 Mar. 2025

Did you know?

Bastion today usually refers to a metaphorical fortress, a place where an idea, ethos, philosophy, culture, etc. is in some way protected and able to endure. But its oldest meaning concerned literal fortifications and strongholds. Bastion likely traces back to a verb, bastir, meaning “to build or weave,” from Old Occitan, a Romance language spoken in southern France from about 1100 to 1500. Bastir eventually led to bastia, an Italian word for a small quadrangular fortress, and from there bastione, referring to a part of a fortified structure—such as an outer wall—that juts or projects outward. Bastione became bastion in Middle French before entering English with the same meaning. You may be familiar with another bastir descendent, bastille, which refers generically to a prison or jail, but is best known as the name of the Parisian fortress-turned-prison stormed by an angry mob at the start of the French Revolution; the Bastille’s fall is commemorated in France by the national holiday Bastille Day.

Operation Mincemeat - Ben Macintyre

I recently got around to listening to the cast album for Operation Mincemeat, a new-ish musical about the 1943 British deception operation to disguise the planned Allied invasion of Sicily by planting false documents on a corpse, which I can only describe as "what if Team Starkid wrote a British version of Hamilton?" (Which I don't mean in a bad way! It's not going into my Spotify rotation, but I'd like to see it at some point during its Broadway run.) Obviously, after that, I had to read Ben Macintyre's nonfiction account Operation Mincemeat: How a Dead Man and a Bizarre Plan Fooled the Nazis and Assured an Allied Victory— it's a doozy of a spy story, stranger than fiction at every turn, from the sheer bonkers Rube Goldberg Trojan Horse of the whole idea to the farcical period where German spies in Spain were trying to get their hands on the documents and the British were pretending like it was of utmost important that they didn't, while also trying to make sure that they did - since that was, you know, the entire point - to the fact that operation mastermind Ewen Montagu's own brother was a Russian spy. (Which explains a subplot of the musical I couldn't quite piece together from the cast album.) I'd actually first encountered this particular bit of spy history during my middle school spy phase, and I remember being enchanted by how they'd conjured up this whole fictional persona down to the stuff in his pockets; it occurred to me this time that they'd essentially reverse-engineered a mystery, with puzzle pieces laid out to be pieced together into the intended misinformation: one of the carefully drafted letters sent by the doomed courier was included solely for a passing reference to sardines as A Clue that the second choice for the planned invasion discussed in the other letters was Sardinia (and definitely not Sicily). It is completely wild that this actually worked.

Anyway! While the plot and characters of the musical Operation Mincemeat appear to be a particularly tongue-in-cheek fictionalization of the actual events and people involved, I genuinely got a little choked up to discover that one of the lines from its song Dear Bill - And why did we meet in the middle of a war? / What a silly thing for anyone to do - is a line from the actual letter the actual Hester Leggett wrote to "Bill" from his fiancée "Pam."

New fic by Punk!

Run don't walk, as a new Stargate Atlantis fic by [personal profile] punk has just gone live! It's a collab where I did the podfic and cover art, and I love the story to bits. It's here on AO3, and here on Punk's DW.

In other news, I'm having fun inserting "mer" into various characters' names for Mermay art. so far, Merdurbot, Aquamer, and Steve MerGarrett. And I organised all my mer art into a series called just stick a mer in it (innuendo fully intended).

My Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia Diversifolia) is gradually getting more spectacular - visitors are starting to comment on it and ask what it is. Here's a pic.

A huge plant taller than the one-story unit behind it, with big lobed green leaves and many plate-sized yellow daisy flowers.

I took that photo yesterday - a lovely, sunny Autumn day. Today it's cloudy, cool and grey, and I'm going to make middle-eastern orange almond cake but as muffins, and will stew all my apples up as the small red ones are decidedly underwhelming but if I add in the 4 remaining Granny Smiths and some lemon juice, it'll be fine. Are you cooking anything interesting? Hugs to you all!

17) Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

Out of order. Very out of order. :D

The rest of the questions are here.

The comments rapidly go off the rails, but there are three links there to go through.

There's more linkage here.

I genuinely do not have the energy to read all of this. I will be sending out an email to my senators, I guess.

So it turns out that all that rain and wind last night was due to a nor'easter. In late May. What the actual fuck. But climate change is a hoax.

Anyway, hit me with your favorite brownie recipes! I myself prefer them fudgy instead of cakey, but I am open to variations.

Second day of not-a-zombie-ness! And I do wonder if it's connected to the fact that I finally managedd to write (and finish!) a fic again ...

For this year's Guardian 520 Day exchange, I wrote for [archiveofourown.org profile] AVAAntares. Protective and possessive Shen Wei, yes! And not in the way you'd maybe expect. *g* This story owes a lot to my beta [personal profile] china_shop, who made me make it immeasurably better:
The Consultant (3,830 words)
Fandom: 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationship: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan
Characters: Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei, Gao Jingfeng
Content Tags: Episode Related, Episode 13, Canon Divergence, Protective Shěn Wēi, Possessive Shen Wei, Shen Wei's secrets, Dancing Around an Envoy Reveal, Zhao Yunlan's Self-Worth Issues, Pre-Relationship

Summary:

Never mind the chaos of the ruined wedding all around them: this was a different trainwreck altogether. Shen Wei - Dixingren Shen Wei, Black-Cloaked Envoy Shen Wei who must have used his powers to break Zheng Yi's spell - had drawn Minister Gao's attention.

And I received fantastic artwork for another of my stories, A Thread as Red as Blood, which is a post-YOHE first time at the SID. Just look at what [personal profile] facethestrange made - it's so good, and captures both the scene in my fic and the canon aesthetic so well!

Relationship/Characters: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan
Content Tags: Implied Sexual Content, Post-Coital Cuddling, Tenderness, Forehead Touching, Inspired by Fanfiction, Fanart, Drawing

Summary:
They leaned against each other, Shen Wei still straddling him, their foreheads touching, both breathing hard. Zhao Yunlan felt sweat cooling on his skin as his heart came down from its race.

"Shen Wei," he murmured, just for the pleasure of saying his name.

"I'm sorry," Shen Wei said, sounding not at all sorry. "I suddenly found I couldn't wait a moment longer."

I'm coughing my guts out and blowing my brains out... Okay I'm exaggerating for effect, but I have a nasty cough and I'm producing thick snot non-stop.

I've been making my favourite masala tea to soothe my throat:

Lots of slices of ginger
A chili
A bunch of black and white peppercorns
A bunch of all-spice berries
A black cardamom pod
A few cloves
A anise star
A cinnamon stick
Some Szechuan peppercorns
Some mustard powder (because I don't have wasabi)

Simmer in a litre of water for 30 minutes. Add a teaspoon of black tea leaves 5 minutes before the end. Serve with warmed soymilk and sugar. Makes three large mugs.

You're supposed to make this with honey but I don't like honey, and maple syrup doesn't quite work for me here.

I've also been eating a bit of raw garlic, taking cold/flu medicine, and extra cough syrup, just because. Judging by how today is as bad as yesterday, the effects have been mostly superficial :P

Third time I've been this sick this year. I hate this. I need to sleep fuller nights, because there are few worst things to weaken an immune system...

(Of course two previous COVID infections didn't help. This isn't COVID though.)

" ‘It’s totally unacceptable’: Mark Carney demands ‘immediate’ explanation after shots fired near Canadians in West Bank

The Israeli military apologized for the incident, which occurred after the delegation “deviated from the approved route” of their visit.”

The joint declaration between France, Canada and the UK a few days ago felt like a turning point to me. Then an "accident" like this is pouring fuel on the fire. It's clear that Trudeau had a Bidenian sense of himself as a Zionist, and it's unclear yet if Carney shares this disposition. I think these early signs say no. Also Trump has been taking to Hamas directly, keeping the Israelis out of the loop. That's the most sensible thing an American administration has done since Obama withheld the American veto on some UNGA or SC resolution in 2015. Qatar and the Saudis have been pressure-hosing gold down Trump's gullet, something that the Israelis can't do. I feel like we might be at all inflexion point...

Theo had a fucked up childhood, she has a past she can't remember, and she has a very rich boyfriend. When said boyfriend brings her to his family's isolated winter cottage, her past and the privileges of rich people collide.

This feels like Beware the Woman and Ready or Not put together in a really good way. The characters are all interesting and flawed and make this fun to read. The slow revealing of the truth, of all the connections, worked really well at the pace we got.

I loved the themes, the setting, the mood. The dialogues worked well, too, and the connections between the people. Also, I liked how the book gave people some grace despite their privileges and shortcomings.

The whole set-up the story needed to work feels a bit far-fetched but I really didn't mind because I liked the story so much and it didn't destroy the twists and reveals.

I'm in Minneapolis with Steph and two round cats, and the sun is shining.

I flew through Saskatoon this time, for reasons that escape me but probably had to do with it being half the price of a direct flight. The flight to Saskatoon was pretty full; Sask-Mpls had somewhere under forty people (I counted), on a 32x6-seat plane.

Having no one else in your row in economy feels positively luxurious.

I've some homework to do today, and some to do in the next few days. I promised to make banana bread today as well. Mostly I'm enjoying the sunshine and the company.
