A bunch of people I don't know were sitting down the table from me at lunch in the dining hall. A woman waited in the custom-made sandwich line for a while, and then stormed up saying that she was planning to have a turkey sandwich for lunch but remembered that it's Friday, so she can't have meat. What she served herself instead was an entire plate full of french fries. I had no trouble obtaining a large meal with no meat or french fries, but I guess hummus or steamed veggies with tofu or yogurt with fruit (I had them all)didn't seem like possibilities to her.

Your options sound much yummier.

Also, maybe she doesn't know many vegetarians? When we told James's mom how many vegetarians we were expecting at the rehearsal dinner (8 out of 30 people) she started freaking out since she didn't know what they could possibly eat. Luckily we were able to tell her we would handle it and just got food from elsewhere (or, rather, Cally got food from elsewhere). I guess if you eat meat at most meals, it would seem very strange not to do so, but since James and I eat very little meat anyway, it just seems like not a big deal to me. As for lent though, James's mom is pretty strict about the no-meat-on-friday thing, so I would think it wouldn't be so odd to her.

Quotation from Don Morrison's late mother, upon learning that Don & Elisabeth Trumpler don't eat meat: "Not even tuna fish?!" Maybe there was some eat fish instead of meat on Fridays free-association for her.

I deal with someone at work who makes the same type of Friday meat comments all the time. She gave up 'sweets' for Lent so she has sugary orange 'drink' instead of her usual diet Cokes and potato chips instead of M&Ms. (last year she gave up alcohol for Lent but argued it was OK to have beer on St. Patricks Day)

Somebody last weekend (Ellen?) claimed that the Vatican was moving St Patrick's day this year because it falls during Holy Week. Maybe the pope is familiar with your co-worker...
