We turned off the lights, computers, and other things for the designated hour last night. It was not a big deprivation. I washed the dishes with water that had previously been heated. I hung clothes on the rack that had been washed earlier in the day. Arthur talked on the phone. We lit two candles, but also had the street light and a bit of moon for light if needed. I don't suppose we really saved much electricity, and I was disappointed to discover that nobody was trying to record any blips in overall usage.
The fact that we turn the power off to many things (all of the stuff in my office equivalent and the TV and its pals) when not using them probably helps more. The router is on all the time, though, and we were amused by today's Doonesbury:

Science Friday last week was all about birds. The topic of wind farms came up and one of the callers made the usual comment about harm to birds. The expert agreed that a few of the first really big ones had been devastating to birds, but he pointed out that subsequent ones with careful site studies beforehand haven't been very harmful, and when one compares wind farms to the massive habitat destruction caused by strip mining for coal, wind seems very benign.
