This is what I've written as my concluding paragraph for the HFCS paper. Note that I actually use conclude in the text. I suspect Arthur will make me change it when he copy-edits the whole thing sometime before 10 AM tomorrow.
>> Science has tended to advance because someone had a wild and crazy idea and set out to prove it. People tend to notice correlations, and it's sometimes disappointing when they prove spurious. It's hard not to conclude that a lot of researcher time and funding and endless virtual ink on the internet has been squandered trying to prove the wild and crazy ideas promulgated to explain the overlap between the increased use of high fructose corn syrup and, well, almost everything that could go wrong with human metabolism. This is not an enthusiastic endorsement of the HFCS business (nyah nyah nyah to you, Cargill and ADM), because processed food still violates Michael Pollan's dictum “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants,” but the stuff is not so awful.<<
