shock ending of The Return of the Jedi

Channel surfing and caught the last few minutes of "Return of the Jedi." It looked odd to me and I realized that it must be the revised version, which we'd never seen. We were totally shocked by the fact that (sort of spoilers)

when they show the smiling Jedi ghosts at the, David Prowse had been replaced by Hayden Christensen. What were they thinking?

I believe the "explanation" is that the form you take when a ghost is from the last time you were on the right side of the force, or something. Thus the Anakin that appears should be before he became Darth Vader. Yeah, I don't buy it either.
