I pray fairly regularly, but don't actually believe in a deity who changes physical events - if I knew someone with cancer, for example, I might pray for emotional strength for him or her but not to have the dangerous cells removed by divine intervention. I'm not the only one - yesterday the student minister's prayer for a woman who had been hit by a car while crossing Mass Ave in East Lexington was something along the lines of "help her as she and her body try to heal."
Still, contrary to my norm, I've been praying every day for the safety of the Obama family. In this case, I'd be perfectly OK with some sort of heavenly weapons shield placed around them. I could borrow other religious language and say that it feels like it would take a miracle for them to make it past election day alive and well, but maybe what it really takes is careful police work.
