Some of the PT PhD students were doing a study of grip strength the other day and I was tested. My right hand average number was 64 and left hand 61. This is in the above average category for women my age. There's a shocking (to me, although I guess by now I should know better) disparity between the male and female values - my numbers would put me in the poor category for men of any age. I was therefore reading articles about grip strength, especially the ones about how it is correlated with predicting general health, but got distracted when I came across articles about rodent grip strength. I haven't been at it long enough to get a clear idea of how they test grip strength in rats (probably not with a tiny dynamometer), but while I'm usually saddened by animal testing, I was pleased to learn that one can do a keyword search for paw use.
