ss number rant
Nov. 14th, 2008 08:20 amI was about to renew my driver's license online and was infuriated that they ask for my social
security number (yes, I gave it to them years ago, because I wanted the license). At the bottom of the page is this:
>>If you currently use your Social Security Number as your License Number, the RMV will automatically issue you a State Assigned Number. Federal Law prohibits use of your Social Security Number on a license.<<
My suspicion is that Federal law probably prohibits requiring it when you obtain a license as well, but they won't admit it. (and I don't have time to look it up now). When Florence got hers several years ago they were no longer using it for the number but told her they wouldn't issue a license if she didn't give them the SS number.
Harrumph.
What I don't know is whether they'd ask me for it if I actually went into an RMV office in person,
old license in hand. I think I'll try that.
