We had been meaning to try Zhu, the relatively new "pan-Asian" vegan restaurant across Lake Street from the Arlington Capitol Theater. Valentine's Day seemed like a good occasion, so we went for lunch.  On the way from Arlington Heights, we noticed that someone (dubbed The Valentine Bandit by Arthur) went along Mass Ave and taped (with masking tape) a piece of paper with a plain red heart on almost every business in the Heights and in East Arlington.  Just an 81/2 X 11 piece of paper, two or three strips of masking tape, always on glass store-front windows.
The food was very good. We ordered the sizzling soy cutlet dish.  Like at Denny's (as far as I know), it came on a cast-iron skillet, with a little mit on the handle, still cooking in the black bean sauce.  It didn't match the sizzling rice soup that the Chang Sho in Cambridge had thirty years ago, but it tasted good, anyway.  No peppers. We liked the miso soup, the cold sesame/peanut noodles, and the dumplings.  We'll return.  Followed that by ginger cookies from Quebrada, and then I got on the 77 bus. We had been watching the stop through the window, and were surprised to note that it was running exactly on schedule.

We spoke to Flo, who said that the notable gift in her second-grade class's Valentine's Day party was pet rocks.  We were startled, but did some web searching, and indeed, one can buy party-favor sized pet rocks in a small box with holes and straw, just like those of the 70s. The kids apparently were entranced by them.  Even at a couple of bucks each, that's a big escalation from just the little paper schoolroom valentines, but those who went minimalist were not scorned.
