lauradi7dw: me wearing a straw hat and gray mask (anniversary)
On Friday, after the mall excursion, I went across the street (which is to say, the Middlesex Turnpike) to the AMC and watched most of Captain America: Brave New World. I got there late. The show had disappeared from the sales screen but the living person in the booth was willing to take my money.* I went because I knew it would be automatically dissed because it is full of people of color. The current CA is played by Anthony Mackie, who also was listed as producer. Carl Lumbly. Giancarlo Esposito. Xosha Roquemore (who was new to me, but apparently not to acting). Danny Ramirez, who played the Falcon. Someone writing for The Mary Sue pointed out that he flew a lot in Top Gun Maverick, as well. There were white lead actors too, including Harrison Ford, who in an interview led one to believe that he was only in it for the money, but he did a good job. He is 82 and gets to play a somewhat younger president, so it's not really a nod to his age-mate Joe Biden.
It was OK. It's a comic book movie, so there was too much action, but the small introspective conversations were good. It made $200 million dollars worldwide on its opening weekend. An article in Forbes tried to have it both ways, that it was a good showing but not really. At any rate, I did my bit.

Today I went to the State House to be part of the 1/50th of the 50 states of protests against Musk, mostly, but the gimmick for today was no king (since it's President's day).

I don't subscribe to the Globe but it looks like they estimate 1000 people.

I was there for about an hour, from 11 until noon. I enjoyed watching people stream up the sidewalks from Park Street and Boylston stations. Thanks, MBTA. I saw [personal profile] nosrednayduj and family. There were a fair number of people wearing masks. Covid numbers are down but flu is still a big deal, and besides, it keeps one's face warm.

* a nonsensical amount, like $10.86 or thereabouts, which was a special low price for the first show.
The following day, Ernesto's in the North End charged me $7.44 for my margarita pizza. Surely this is a ploy to get people to use a card? I thwarted them, and paid in cash, exact change.
