Now that we have finished our first clinical experience, there is a party at the home of one of my
classmates. I promised to bring an appetizer. I bought some really good bread at When Pigs Fly in Davis Square (sun dried tomato/oil/basil) and thought to make orange lentil spread to go along with it. It suddenly dawned on me that other people might not eat that. They will know as the token vegetarian in the class (there may be one other), I won't bring anything with meat, but something that seems like a basic staple to me might seem weird to them. Oh, well. I'll leave out the Indian spices, in case that would make it taste too strong (but would that make it boring?).

Orange lentil spread sounds amazing... would you be willing to share the recipe? (and, as a non-vegetarian, I think it sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to bring to a potluck with omnivores).

There are lots of versions on the web w/turmeric or garam masala or other spice mixtures, all of which I left out. What I actually did was just chop some onion, saute it a bit in a small amount of olive oil, add the red lentils and a lot of water, and cook until it was mush, but dry enough to spread. A number of people tasted it politely, and two or three really liked it. I usually put fresh garlic in, but didn't happen to have any yesterday. I have used it on a couple of different varieties of fancy bread in the past, and I like it on baked potatoes too.
