best song ever?
Aug. 6th, 2011 07:23 pmProbably not, but maybe one of the best songs of the past 50 years (barely - released in 1961).

The 25 year anniversary of the release of the film "Stand By Me" will be Monday. Wil Wheaton was interviewed about it on NPR tonight, and they played the song at the end of the interview. I think it's a great song in isolation, but the amount of gut reaction memories it brings up is important, as well. I don't know that I heard it in 1961 - that was before I had my own radio, and I don't know what my parents listened to. I certainly remember it from high school, though, because it fits perfectly with what was called (in that time and place) "beach music," the kind of stuff one might use for dancing the Carolina Shag or (or DC hand dancing, which I discovered later). When Flo was in elementary school, she was a big fan of music from the 40s-60s. She had the soundtrack for the film, including the title song. I still love it.
