Relatives suggested Paxlovid, and I developed a low-grade fever (99.7), so I called.
The nurse called back after two hours. (I was not on hold - they put my number in a queue. Try not to get sick on a holiday weekend). She was surprised at how few meds I take for a person my age. She said to take Tylenol for the fever, and call back if it doesn't go down, or particularly if it goes over 102. But she also implied that after five days, no fever means I'm probably good to go. That's a little weird. If you're keeping your fever down with drugs, how can you tell you're fever-free?
Rest and fluids, like almost any other sickness. She was willing to make a video appointment for me in the morning to talk to someone else about Paxlovid, but thought I'd be OK without it. Call back right away if I start wheezing or become short of breath. I don't think I've ever wheezed, so I would be happy to go the rest of my life without it.
She said I was the second person she had spoken to this afternoon whose first case this is. Hail to thee, other covid-conscious person! Also, what the heck is it about this strain? About to take my temperature again and then eat soup, as is traditional.

Most people that I know who took Paxlovid got rebound. I opted not to take it 1.5 years ago as a result. You can actually get rebound just from Covid itself, but I think it's much less common than Paxlovid-induced.

I always think that "fever free" should mean "drug and fever free". Usually the anti-fever drug (ibuprofen or tylenol) wears off enough after a day. But my true standard is "antigen test negative", which probably takes more days, before I want to interact with a recently infected person.

I wonder why they suggested Tylenol rather than ibuprofen. I think of ibuprofen is the safer drug in general, so if you don't have some reason to not take it (some drugs are incompatible with NSAID use), then I figure that would be better.

Also, I'm terribly sorry this happened to you. You have been so careful all this time!
