the next best thing to being there*

I'm watching the new year's fireworks in Seoul live. the ROK is 14 hours ahead of us when we aren't saving daylight. I wondered whether they would be happening - the whole country is officially in mourning due to the plane crash, but there they are. I of course didn't have to search - youtube on my phone knew what I was thinking and offered them up as the top choice. I was irritated yesterday that youtube on the laptop (where I have the history turned off) is now requiring a login for me to see stuff, so I am only using the phone and my old iPad for it now. I don't have to log in on the phone for it to read my thoughts.
I am vacillating about going into Boston to see the 7 PM fireworks tonight. I had planned to do that, then wander around, attend the ringers' party and midnight ringing, but I started being nervous when I noticed on Saturday that everywhere I went, people were coughing and sneezing. As usual, some people in each circumstance were masked, but it's my impression that the no mask people are getting even worse - the guy on the bus who was sneezing didn't even take his hand off his phone to cover his sneeze.
*An ad when I was a kid claimed that long distance was the next best thing to being there.
