Eating in memory
Oct. 17th, 2025 03:44 pmAfter hearing of Susan Stamberg's death I decided that I would make Mama Stamberg's cranberry relish for real this year. ten years after a very faked version.

When I saw the news this morning of the death of Baek Se-Hee, I decided to have tteokbokki for lunch

If you scroll through the photos here, the tteokbokki is the rice-based cylinders in the fiery red sauce

The version there has fake fish cakes (the street food version often has real ones). The tteokbokki one can buy at Trader Joe's is in just plain gochujang sauce, no added protein. When I very occasionally make it at home, I cut way back on the sauce and add a little yogurt. It's very popular in South Korea. Some people like the spice heat because they just like that sort of thing, others like it because it's distracting from what is bothering you otherwise?
