cold there, cold here

Due to strikes by Russia, there is a total blackout in Kyiv currently - dark, cold. The temperature outside there is about the same as the temperature outside my house, but I have heat and electricity inside. I was planning to take the bus to a memorial service this morning but am probably going to use the car instead. I am not tough, is what I'm saying.

I grew up in central North Carolina, which very occasionally gets heavy snow but more often gets ice storms. I remember a time in the 1990s that many trees in my parents' area fell due to the weight of the ice. The whole area was without power. A neighbor with a camping stove brought them coffee in the morning. They huddled under blankets. My mother said "It's so nice when the sun comes up and it's not dark." That was the closest they came to complaining, at least to me. My thought then was "nobody will ever be as tough as people who grew up during the Depression" but of course that isn't true. In Ukraine and Gaza and Sudan and probably lots of other places, people of every age have to be tough. You're right. Nobody deserves that.
