I am familiar a bit with the TED conferences through their internet presence.
http://www.ted.com/
I didn't realize until just now that the organization has some sort of fairy godmother powers. I was going through the photos on Edward Burtynsky's site and came across this bit:
"When Edward won the 2005 TED Prize, he was granted three wishes. One wish was to encourage a worldwide conversation about the planet, its problems and some possible solutions. Burtynsky chose Worldchanging.com as the way to kick-start that conversation."
I don't know what his other wishes were, but worldchanging is definitely worth perusing.
I especially recommend this article

And go look at his pictures.

(go to works, on the sidebar) Beautiful as art, sometimes shocking as a reminder of what we're doing to the planet. Also, the source of my new word for the day: densified.
This is a stack of densified scrap metal in Ontario.
