non-starving students
Oct. 11th, 2007 05:20 pmMy English class went with some others yesterday to see Jack Kerouac's typewritten scroll of "On the Road" in a downtown Lowell museum. Two guys sitting behind me on the bus back were seniors, English majors. They certainly looked like the stereotype of the All-American boy, more likely on the way to the baseball game than to a museum, but so much for my preconceptions. I was very amused that when their discussion turned to the cheapest way to get a bunch of Faulkner novels, they decided that buying the Oprah box set used on Amazon would be it. They're probably right - especially impressive when compared to what textbooks cost. You can get three of them for the price of first-run movie in Boston.
