more then and now
Sep. 13th, 2009 12:45 pmI was sitting here, idly wondering how I managed to get through college the first time without owning a three-hole puncher, when I remembered that there would have been almost no holes to punch. Professors almost never gave hand-outs, because they would have had to use mimeograph stencils to make them. I didn't do chapter outline reviews or other study stuff on the computer and print it out, because that would have required punch cards and paper that was green and white striped and really wide. We didn't print out and refer to power point slide presentations because power point didn't exist. Photocopies were expensive and shiny.
One of the hole-punching chores I was about to begin was setting up a notebook for the 0.2 ream of paper from the clinic where I'm starting my practicum tomorrow. More than 40 pages of it is "review" information about ECG (EKG for people who like to reflect the German origins of the expression)testing - where to place the leads, which I mostly know, and extensive diagnostic and educational information to go along with it, which I mostly don't. I was relieved on Friday, upon meeting a DPT student who did her practicum there last year, to learn that they don't really give you a test upon arriving the first day, and don't leave you alone with a patient until (unless) you're competent.
