looking at art
Jan. 7th, 2014 12:22 pmI am going through old magazines and clippings (and books). There was one from a New Yorker article about a class for medical students about looking at art. One of the students was developing an ongoing relationship with a Hals portrait at the Frick, viewing it weekly:

(I've having trouble embedding the image). The student was reminded of an image in Frank Netter's medical illustrations, of a guy with heart failure. "He just looks like he is going to collapse." The Elderly Man looks like he's clutching the chair for balance, and while his hands are pale, his face is flushed. The Hals figure doesn't look frantic to me the way the Netter guy does (if I've found the correct image).
