Except for my lack of writing or plotting skills.  The knitting group I sometimes attend was discussing mystery novels yesterday.  I made my usual remark that I am tired of murders and would like one in which a stolen bicycle is recovered.  One of the women suggested that I read Encyclopedia Brown. I started to wonder what he would be like now.  Sobol wrote 27 books about EB and he stayed a boy detective throughout, but if he was 10 in 1963, when the series started, he'd be 60 now.  If he stayed a detective (private all this time?  following in his father's footsteps and starting out in a police academy?), he'd presumably be jaded and weary, and more likely to be dealing with heroin smugglers or home invasions than bicycle theft.  When my bike was stolen, the Lexington police noted it, but did nothing further.  When my parents' house was robbed and car stolen (never leave the car key on an obvious hook near the door) while they were out of town, the Durham NC police only did slightly more - in essence, they told my parents that there was nothing to do about it, although the cleaning crew at a nearby motel did find their passports in a trash can.  If the police followed up with the (presumed) burglars' credit card company, nothing came of it, nor did they recover the car.
