I keep making comparisons re Covid 19
Feb. 26th, 2020 07:59 amI am doing the stuff one is supposed to (washing my hands, adding non-perishable goods to the usual storm stash, etc). I just can't keep myself from comparing the news to things that actually worry me.
As of yesterday, the global death-toll from the virus was about 2700. As of this morning, the 2020 number of US homicide deaths by firearms was 2282 (as usual, the number of gun suicides in the US was way higher, but I not making that comparison, because I doubt anybody deliberately died from viral effects).
There have been fewer than 100 cases at all in India (not deaths), but as of this morning, 24 Indian Muslims have been murdered by supporters of Modi's Hindu nationalism ideals. Since yesterday, if I'm reading it right.
I'd be happy to have my tax dollars used to make a vaccine, but if we're spending money, I would also really like a nationwide expansion of the program that exists in one or two areas of Colorado, to get guns out of the hand of domestic abusers. https://www.kunc.org/post/guns-owned-domestic-violence-offenders-probed-denver
With one covid19 case found in Brazil or thereabouts, we are now at the situation of Antarctica being the only continent* with no cases. It seems to me that the Science Fiction stories with that scenario are just waiting to be written - could a bunch of scientists and support people repopulate the world after the rest of us have died from the virus? Stuff like that.
