Duolingo, small accomplishments
Jul. 5th, 2020 12:09 pmI keep doing Duolingo Spanish. I keep swearing at it in English.
Arthur has been a Kpop fan for several years, before they became anti-fa. (joke, sort of). After a couple of months of getting a lot of our other entertainment from Korea, including KBO baseball and various dramas available on Netflix and Youtube, I decided a bit arbitrarily last week or so to learn how to sound out Hangul, the Korean alphabet (which apparently is called something else in the North). After a number of hours on Duolingo, I realized this morning that I could look at this 다이노스 and know (within the context of a site about KBO baseball) that it is the Dinos part of NC Dinos, a baseball team. NC is the computer game company that has the naming rights, but in the world, it also can stand for North Carolina. In May, there were contacts between the Dinos and the Durham Bulls team, pledging mutual support. There will be no minor league baseball in North America this year, but I have joined the combined fandom and bought this shirt, featuring the mascots of the two teams.

I am having a lot of trouble with sounding things out generally, but it was positive reinforcement.
Speaking of Duolingo, I noticed while looking for something else that UMass Lowell (go Riverhawks!) is using the Duolingo English test for foreign speakers, since TOEFL exams are not happening in Covid time.
"We are requesting that international applicants complete the Duolingo Test of English, which can be taken remotely, in place of the TOEFL/IELTS exams. The threshold Duolingo score to meet UMass Lowell's English language requirement ranges from 105 to 115, depending on your program of interest."

Also no GRE requirements this year, for similar reasons. Trying to think of a masters program I should suddenly take up.
