I am weeks behind in posting. I don't know that I'll catch up today (or that I should try), but a few things to begin with.

We saw "Interstellar" at the Burlington AMC, which at some point in the past year replaced regular cinema seats with lounge chairs, basically.  They have done a couple of things in conjunction with that which seem calculated to slow down the ticket line - the matinee price for non-3D is now $8.79 (really), and you have to pick your exact seat.  Making change takes more time than it did when it was an even number of dollars, and picking the seat can take time.  Arthur hypothesized that they are presuming (or encouraging) a non-cash transaction.  We picked the seats in the very back, so that we could stand up and stretch from time to time during a three hour movie.  It worked fine.   Short, not very spoilery review "Best robots ever!" (I don't do the thing about putting periods between words). Longer more thoughtful spoilery comment, which may be a comment about white male privilege in our society in general, not just about the writers of this movie - two of the main characters are female scientists, and there are a few other women in the cast, but there are several instances of men lying to "protect" them - removing agency from women seems to be one of the ongoing themes of the film (as far as I can tell) and Arthur didn't notice it at all until I pointed it out.  Physics stuff here, totally spoilerific: http://scienceblogs.com/principles/2014/11/09/quick-interstellar-thoughts/

I didn't post on World Toilet Day, but think it's very important.  http://www.unwater.org/worldtoiletday

We went to the first half of the Boston Bhangra competition last night at the Orpheum Theater.  It had been years since we last were there, and noticed how really run-down it is. The bass was turned up so loud on the huge speakers (progressively more as time passed) that by intermission, the distortion was blocking out parts of the music.  We had on industrial headphones, but most of the audience seemed unprotected, including some *babies*!  We left, with thoughts about how standardized many of the costumes were (there must be a catalogue) and how young all those knees were.  Most of the teams were university-affiliated.

"it’s an original story, not a sequel or a remake or based on something that was successful in another medium.."

My take on it was that it's a mix up of Tam Lin, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Star Wars. Throw in a little Contact, Return of the Jedi, Grapes of Wrath.

The first hour was interesting...after that, it was just tedious.
