A week ago I went to a show at Boston Garden, or whatever it’s called, to see/hear the K-pop group Twice. It may not have been the most densely packed indoor concert I’ve been to. That was probably Bob Dylan and The Band at Charlotte Colosseum in 1973. Last Friday the seat on my right was empty, but the place was full of people, probably about 14,000. I had on my usual N95 duckbill. I felt safe, somehow. It’s been a week and I have stayed healthy so I guess my feeling was correct. Two days later I stayed home from ringing to do some prep for having visitors, and watched the Easter service from my local UU congregation online. I found it wonderful. There was more Jesus content than usual, but also Gloria Gaynor and K-pop Demon hunters

I had the thought while watching that I wished I had gone in person, and also being glad I didn’t because the sanctuary was so crowded. 200+ people compared to multiple thousands? What’s up, brain? Do I feel that the space of one armrest between neighbors instead of being crowded into a pew is enough? Or what?

It’s a little after 9 AM right now. I have had at least 5 mood swings already this morning about going to Tampa for BTS in a couple of weeks. The audience there will be more like 70,000. It will be in the open air and I booked my seat to be near the top of the stadium for ventilation reasons, but tens of thousands of people singing along will mean that the surrounding air isn’t really fresh. Three nights away (due to somewhat complicated travel arrangements), hours on planes and in terminals, giving tourist dollars to Florida. Definite drawbacks.
When I was discussing this with Flo the other day and said “What if WWIII happens between now and August. I’m will have missed my chance to see BTS.” None of this makes sense. I will probably regret whichever choice I make.
