caffeine as a performance enhancing drug
Jan. 3rd, 2009 07:13 pmWe have a friend who celebrates his birthday every year by holding a candlepin bowling outing. With rare exceptions, this is the one time a year I bowl, and I'm not naturally talented at it anyway. It also is the one time a year I wear leather shoes, but that's not relevant, probably.
The first game today I rolled about a 40, then we had a break for the party part of the party. There was Carvel chocolate ice cream cake, and participating in the festive spirit, I ate some. In the second game my score was 85, by far a personal best. It probably should have been about 80, because a few oddities happened, like a pin falling over by itself once before I even bowled, and the time that a gutter ball struck a fallen pin and knocked over two others. Still, that's about twice my usual score. It is generally held that caffeine can be ergogenic, useful for training and endurance but not particularly helpful in anaerobic conditions (like sprints) but a very quick search of google scholar didn't reveal anything about its affect on bowling accuracy.
Totally unrelated: Matt Smith, WTH?
