small mysteries

lauradi7dwEvery once in a while I clear off my night table. A lot of it involves recycling little slips of paper and stuff like that, but sometimes there are odd things under the layers. Today I found a (cracked) red plastic pie server, coins from four countries, a surprising number of bank statements, and lots of pens, inter alia.
Also mysterious to me is where all the seemingly new stuff comes from on Battlestar Gallactica (trying to catch up before the new season). They don't have factories or the endlessly useful Star Trek thing that generates anything needed from waste products. Two examples - printer ink and underwear with perfectly good elastic. They've been traveling for years - how much stuff do they have in storage?
