Saw this link at Making Light, and decided it needed to be even more widespread. The science bit doesn't come until page five. The heartbreaking bits are throughout. And some weird ones.

I thought the most interesting part was the juror who talked about how he and his wife had both thought the other had picked their daughter up from day care, and basically said it's the same thing but at the other end of the day. I think this is a much more common occurrence (thankfully, since the kid is presumably perfectly safe even if the day care people are annoyed at having to stay late). Maybe I'm wrong though and it happens about the same amount as leaving a kid in a car.

My parents only forgot to pick me up once, and I was in third grade or so, and just stayed late with the afterschool teacher and the kid who's parents always forgot to pick him up, so it wasn't so bad.
