remarkable

So, I realized at 17 that I'd have to actually work all my life. It's good to be prepared.

The being able to retire thing was just a brief interval in human history - before the mid-20th century people presumed they'd have to work until they died, or at least help out in an offspring's household after becoming too frail to do hard labor. It's similar to the amazing (and short) giddy no-consequences sex time, also in the 20th century - after penicillin and the Pill, before AIDS and all those other nasty infections that don't respond to meds. Actually, one could probably keep coming up with examples - the whole petroleum-powered car era might be coming to an end soon, as well.

Exactly. Even when SS was begun, you only got it if you lived past the average age of death - then 64. I see nothing wrong with working until I'm dead. I would like the option of something physically possible when I'm ancient.

Women not *working*, no abortion are two other things that were brief blips in history. Learning history is so worth while.
