Or maybe the question is, what's wrong with those people who keep complaining about Michelle Obama's appearance? Supposedly there was a ruckus in the media because she walked off of Airforce One wearing jean shorts.

They were in Arizona, so I like to think that the thing in her right hand is a rolled-up hat, ready to be worn in the blazing sun. It seems to me that people on all sides of the political spectrum should admire that outfit. She's promoting tourism, the anti-Muslim folks (hi, Fox news, waving at you) could see it as a rebuke to the laws requiring women to be covered, the people who like to wear casual clothes could identify, the fashionistas would have to admit that she is *wearing* those clothes. They aren't cut-offs - they have a hem, and her upper arms (the buffness of which has offended the press in the past) are covered.

It's not as though it was a slow news week and they needed to make something up just to fill space.

She's being thrifty too! She looks so *normal*; gosh how nice for our First Lady to be *normal*.

That was what people liked so much about the Ford White House. Especially after the Nixons, it was very comforting. They moved in with their own mattress, and Gerry bought Betty a bathrobe for Christmas. The opposite of elitist, of which the Obamas have been accused.

I remember that well. They were a wonderful couple.
