netiquette pondering
Sep. 26th, 2009 07:18 pmWriter Robin McKinley has a blog (like lots of other writers, but with more footnotes). She rings somewhere in Hampshire and blogs about that, although she has made up names for the people she rings with. She (and the blog) were filled with trepidation for days before they rang handbells at a wedding (church had no tower bells) but it seems to have gone OK, and she posted photos, including one labelled "This is the only record anywhere of people smiling while ringing handbells in public." That may be an exaggeration, but I thought it was funny, and considered posting a link to the ringing-chat list. Then I decided that it would be rude to do so without asking, and when I thought of asking, I couldn't decide how to word it. For some reason (presumably because it's unlikely to be read by anybody she knows), posting it here doesn't seem a violation to me. The internet is a billboard, and she put up the pictures, but if I put it where ringers might see and recognize the other people in the picture, their pseudonyms would be blown (can one blow a pseudonym, the way a cover can be blown?)
