I first heard (of) Alice Gerrard in the mid-1970s, when she and Hazel Dickens were a duo. In part of my mind, she's still about forty, but time has passed.
This (she's on the right)  is what she looks like in my head (this record is on the shelf downstairs):

Above the transcript of the NPR story about her

On the cover of her new album:

The 2nd and 3rd photos are recent - I think she looks 15-20 years older in the album cover, but I'm not sure why.

The Central Synagogue in NYC streams their services.  The Yom Kippur eve music has been nice, and quite traditional for the most part.  The sermon was about what would be called in UU parlance "right relationship" - listening to other people's stories instead of tuning them out, etc.  I was expecting Avinu malkeinu next (there is a PDF of the siddur and I've been following along a bit).  What actually came in between was " For good" ("Because I knew you") from Wicked, sung by the cantor and the main rabbi (a man and a woman, respectively, which I'm mentioning to help you imagine how the voices blend). Huh.  I can see how it fits  with the sermon topic, but I was startled.
