money money money
Feb. 28th, 2006 05:40 pmAn interesting juxtaposition is the end of PBS's showing of "Bleak House" and the beginning of the Supreme Court case featuring Anna Nicole Smith and her peevish son-in-law.

Both dramas deal heavily with the bitter consequences of drawn-out inheritance cases. The concept of dying broke (or leaving all your money to charity in your will) looks better and better. It hasn't been my experience, although we've suggested to my parents that maybe it's time to stop being so frugal. We're well set up, they paid for our educations including some of Florence's college savings and family money has helped out in other ways (the down payment for our first house was partially from stock from my grandparents). They should start doing stuff like flying (first class?) instead of long car trips to visit us or whatever would make them more comfortable. In our wills we've set up most of our assets in trust for Florence, except for a little charity stuff. Not practicing what I preach, at least not yet. On the other hand, I really agree that there should extensive estate taxes (with the already existing exemptions for farms and other family businesses) on inherited wealth.

Yeah, that's the father of the famously rich Bill Gates. The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation currently is funding most of the polio eradication work in the world, leave the WHO to fund other projects, but they still have astounding amounts of money. They need to start spending faster.
