my broadway debut
Jul. 14th, 2006 02:24 pmThis was a whole long entry that got swallowed somehow between keyboard & LJ, and the autosave thing only saved a couple of lines. I have no idea what happened, but I'll try again.
I spent several days in NYC taking tap classes and hanging out with dancers from around the world (and dancers I knew from home).

Tuesday night the classes showed off what they had learned, and other groups that had brought routines from home performed them. See the picture at

and then imagine a raised wooden platform replacing the grand piano. The improv stuff was OK, but during the choreographed pieces I spent at least part of the time staring at the edge of the platform, trying not to fall off. I have no idea what I looked like, but it couldn't have been ideal for my stage presence. (not that I really have much stage presence anyway).
I had a couple of new (for me) NY experiences. Sunday night after the tap jam at a place on the Chelsea pier had been invaded and broken up by Italian soccer celebrators, I rode back to the hotel in a cab with some other people. It's a TV & movie stereotype to go zooming up and down the streets of Manhattan in a yellow cab, but I don't think I'd ever done it. It was OK, but I don't think I'll do it again. Mostly I walked. I hadn't noticed before that downtown actually is downhill - it proved useful when I was trying to cover 14 blocks in 10 minutes.
I'd been to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in the past, but I'm pretty sure I'd never been on the Staten Island ferry before. We went late Monday evening, when the weather was warm but not windy and the moon was full. Really nice.
